Epidemiology of Mongolism

چکیده

Fluorescent antibody techniques, immunochemical methods and progress in areas like gnotobiology and allergy have greatly expanded our knowledge in the serology of bacteria, and serological tools are now often used for classification and identification of bacteria. Thirteen specialists have contributed to this most impressive volume that presents the latest information in the field. A discussion of individual chapters cannot be possible; suffice it to say that thoroughness in compilation of factual knowledge and literature has been achieved. This makes it an indispensable part of a serological or bacteriological library. Particularly intriguing are those parts that present outlooks for further development in serology with regard to taxonomy and diagnosis (e.g., the analysis of Enterobacteriaceae antigens). Certain results still have to be presented in an "isolated" fashion, i.e. without integrating principles. This is inevitable, just as is the fact that the serological approach to bacterial taxonomy occasionally leads to conclusions different from those arrived at through biochemical and/or morphological research. It is also to be hoped that a uniform nomenclature for the antigens will be established. The authors have done an extremely valuable service to serology, bacteriology, and clinical science. evaluates them, and relates them. He offers some new interpretations of old information and suggests some new directions for research. Over 500 references are offered, divided into a list of specific references to work cited in the text and a selected bibliography. The rigorous definitions of epidemiological terms that are given will be helpful to readers unfamiliar with their use. A few weakne...

Autoimmune thyroid disease in children with mongolism.

Thyroid function in mongol children has attracted the attention of investigators for many years. Certain clinical similarities between mongolism and cretinism have led, not only to misdiagnosis, but even to the suggestion that altered thyroid function might play a part in the clinical manifestations of mongolism. Much of the earlier use of thyroid therapy in patients with this syndrome was base...

Mongolism in Twins.

It is now well established that persons with mongolism have an extra chromosome No. 21. Apart from a small proportion of cases in which a translocation is present, the anomaly is thought to arise from failure of a pair of No. 2I chromosomes to separate during meiosis in a gamete, or in an early mitotic division in a zygote. It was thought that a study of mongolism in twins might help to determi...

Causation of Mongolism.

EVER since Dr. Langdon Down in 1866 introduced the term " Mongolism," this group of aments has been the subject of numerous investigations. But so far the cause of Mongolism remains obscure and, in spite of a growing amount of literature, it is impossible to say whether there is a single cause for all cases of Mongolism or whether various etiological factors are to be held responsible. Careful ...

A Study of Congenital Heart Defects

Mongolism has aroused widespread interest since the days of Langdon Down's pioneer work in 1866. Numerous hypotheses relating to its aetiology and mechanism have appeared, but none can be regarded as conclusive or final, further observations and research being necessary before a full understanding is possible. Of the many anomalies found in mongolism, affecting nearly every system, that of cong...

The abnormality of tryptophane metabolism in children with mongolism.

There is evidence (Gershoff, Hegsted and Trulson, 1958; Jer6me, Lejeune and Turpin, 1960; O'Brien, Groshek and Streamer, 1960) that children with mongolism have a defect in tryptophane metabolism which is characterized primarily by a diminished urinary excretion of xanthurenic acid. The purpose of this study was to confirm this observation using more exact techniques and to attempt to specify t...
